Prof. Himadri Ghosh, Foundation Studies

With over five decades of transformative contributions to design education, textile innovation, and craft-led development, Prof. (Dr.) Himadri Ghosh stands as a distinguished figure in India’s design ecosystem.
He holds a Ph.D. in Textile Technology from the Faculty of Engineering, Department of Textile Technology, M.S. University, Baroda; a Post Graduate Diploma from the National Institute of Design, Ahmedabad; B.Tex and M.Tex degrees from M.S. University, Baroda; and additional qualifications in Fine Arts and Textile Engineering. Prof. Ghosh blends academic depth with artistic insight.
Prof. Ghosh’s journey began at the National Institute of Design (NID), where he served as Principal Designer and Chairperson of Education. He played a pivotal role in shaping NID’s academic framework, initiating the National Design Business Incubator, leading global collaborations, and contributing to the institute’s transition to university status.
As Dean and Director at the Banasthali Institute of Design, he mentored over 35 Ph.D. scholars and championed research and innovation across premier institutions in India. His influence continues through the academic and professional achievements of his students worldwide.
Beyond academia, Prof. Ghosh has worked with organizations such as UNDP, UNIDO, Khamir, and Julaha, leveraging design as a catalyst for rural development, artisan empowerment, and the preservation of traditional crafts. His efforts have revitalized handloom clusters and built bridges between local artisans and global markets.
An entrepreneur and international design consultant, he founded HighCube Consultancy and has advised institutions across continents—from Harrow Business School (UK) to animation programs in Uganda and the Philippines.
Fluent in four languages and deeply conversant in the universal language of design, Prof. (Dr.) Ghosh continues to inspire through his thought leadership, cross-sectoral projects, and lifelong dedication to meaningful design practice.

Prof. Bhargav Mistry, Industrial Design

Prof. Bhargav Mistry is a seasoned design consultant with over four decades of experience, and a graduate of the prestigious Product Design program at the National Institute of Design (NID), Ahmedabad. His distinguished career spans a diverse range of domains including industrial products, energy meters, domestic appliances, medical equipment, and space application products for the Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO). His contribution to design innovation has earned him an international patent.
In the field of design education, Prof. Mistry has served in key leadership roles such as Dean at the Indian Institute of Crafts and Design, and Dean of Design Culture at Arch College of Design and Business, Jaipur. He is actively involved in teaching Creativity, Innovation, and Design at institutions like IIIT and other leading engineering colleges. He also contributes to curriculum development as a member of various Boards of Studies.
Beyond design, he is a passionate Sarod player and music producer. His three internationally acclaimed albums—Shankara, Shanti, and Road to India—are available on Spotify, Amazon Music, and iTunes. His TEDx talk Design and Music – A Parallel Journey and presentations at global design festivals explore the deep creative interplay between the two disciplines.
He has delivered keynote speeches and convocation addresses at renowned institutions such as CEPT University, Ahmedabad. His recent book, Design & Music – A Propassion, was launched at the Pune Design Festival 2025, underscoring his belief in the transformative power of design and music. Prof. Bhargav Mistry’s journey reflects a life dedicated to creativity, connection, and cultural expression—where design is not only a profession, but a way of uplifting and inspiring.

Prof. Ajanta Sen, Communication Design

Dr Ajanta Sen is a designer, educator, and researcher whose work has shaped design education in India. With a PhD in Development Planning from IIT Bombay, she works at the intersection of technology, culture, and design. Her research foregrounds socio-cultural analysis in industrial design and critiques of emerging media technologies, positioning her as a leading voice in Interaction Design and Social Computing.
As International Director of the Solar Project, she has built cross-cultural learning platforms connecting schools and design institutes in India and the UK. The project has received over a hundred awards and centres creativity, collaboration, and critical thinking in education. Her academic roles include teaching at IDC, IIT Bombay, and Nanyang Technological University, where she urges students to rethink problem-solving through cultural awareness and real-world application. Her work spans from designing chip-based interactive products to crafting computing environments grounded in lived experiences. Her research partnerships include Microsoft Research, Yahoo Research, and Motorola India, with a focus on play, learning, and collaborative futures.
She has co-organised major international design events, including Icograda Design Week in India and the “Designing for Children” conference, pushing conversations on education, access, and design’s role in shaping society. Her platforms, DesigninIndia.net and ColoursOfIndia.net, document indigenous and local design knowledge.
Dr Sen also consults on tech strategies and retail experiences, notably with BPCL and Khadim’s Group. Her practice resists flattening design into commercial utility—she insists on cultural relevance, ethical engagement, and systemic thinking.

Prof. Arun Gupta, Animation & Film Making

Prof. Arun Gupta, an alumnus of FTII, Pune, in Film Direction and of Delhi University in English Literature, was a Senior Professor of Film and HOD, Film & Video Dept. at NID, Ahmedabad, before he retired in 2021 after a quarter century of continuous service. Subsequently, he founded the Moving Image dept. at Anant National University, Ahmedabad as Dean and was later also the HOD of Animation & Game Design at UID, Gandhinagar. He founded the Alpavirama Film Festival at NID, Ahmedabad and the Chaturbhuj Film Festival at UID, Gandhinagar. He is also the author of a book on Bollywood Villains called ‘Purab Aur Paschim: Colonials, Neighbours & Others’.

Prof. Atul Kedia, Industrial Design

Prof. Atul Kedia is a seasoned design academic and professional with a B.E. in Mechanical Engineering from M.S. University of Baroda and a Master of Design (M.Des.) in Industrial Design from IIT Bombay. With a career spanning decades across academia and industry, he brings a unique blend of creative insight, technical expertise, and strategic leadership.
Prof. Kedia has held roles across various levels—from junior positions to top management—and was instrumental in founding the School of Design Studies (SoDS) at UPES Dehradun, successfully establishing it within just two years.
He brings hands-on experience in managing design and innovation projects from concept to completion, with a strong focus on timelines, quality, and cost- effectiveness. His expertise spans creative development, technical processes, digital workflows, ERP systems, and contemporary design tools.
A prolific innovator, Prof. Kedia holds eight registered patents and has been recognized with several accolades, including the Engineering Achievement Award (1997) by the Institute of Engineers, Nasik, and the national Golden Peacock Innovation Award (2004).
His work is grounded in internationally recognized standards and practices, including ISO 9001, ISO 14000, OHSAS, SA-8000, and TS (ISO)-16949. He is also well- versed in methodologies like 5S, Value Engineering, Six Sigma, and Lean manufacturing.
With significant international exposure and a reputation for patience, precision, and collaborative spirit, Prof. Atul Kedia continues to inspire students and professionals alike in the evolving world of design.

Prof. Mahendra Patel, Communication Design

Prof. Mahendra Patel is a legendary figure in Indian design, with over five decades of contribution at the crossroads of typography, visual communication, and multilingual design systems. His prolific career bridges the hand-crafted and the digital—from signage in temple towns to typefaces used in national newspapers.
Trained as a painter at MSU Baroda, he later studied Graphic Design at the National Institute of Design (NID), Ahmedabad, and the Basel School of Design, Switzerland. A defining moment in his journey was his 1971 apprenticeship under the iconic Adrian Frutiger in Paris, which deeply shaped his typographic philosophy. Upon returning to India, Prof. Patel dedicated himself to developing typefaces for eight major Indian scripts, including Devanagari, Gujarati, Bengali, and Tamil, with an emphasis on clarity, accessibility, and linguistic integrity.
Prof. Patel served as a faculty member at NID for 39 years, where he played a pivotal role in shaping design education in India. He has conducted workshops at renowned institutions including IDC-IIT Bombay, Srishti Institute (Bangalore), Rhode Island School of Design (USA), and NSCAD University (Canada), consistently advocating for culturally grounded and precise typographic design.
His contributions have been recognized globally—he was the first Indian recipient of the prestigious Gutenberg Prize (2010), and was honoured with the Icograda Grandmaster Award (2007). Even after retirement, Prof. Patel remains an active mentor and thinker, committed to exploring the evolving role of Indian scripts in contemporary design. His work resists homogenization, championing a design practice that is inclusive, pluralistic, and rooted in linguistic and cultural diversity.

Prof. Ravi Poovaiah, Communication Design

Prof. Ravi Poovaiah is a pioneering figure in Indian design education, known for integrating critical pedagogy, interdisciplinary practice, and cultural sensitivity into the academic design landscape. A senior faculty member at the Industrial Design Centre (IDC), IIT Bombay since 1981, he has been instrumental in shaping how design is taught and practiced in the country.
With a foundation in Mechanical Engineering from IIT Madras and a Master’s in Industrial Design from IIT Bombay, Prof. Poovaiah further expanded his expertise with a second Master’s in Product and Graphic Design from the Rhode Island School of Design (RISD), USA. This unique blend of engineering precision and visual storytelling defines his approach—rigorous, contextual, and socially responsive.
Currently holding the esteemed D.L. Shah Chair for Innovation at IDC, he leads initiatives that foster design-led innovation and democratize design education. He spearheaded the e-Kalpa project, an MHRD-funded initiative to build open-access digital platforms supporting design learning across India. As Co-Director of COSMIC—a collaborative research programme with institutions in Singapore—he has explored the intersections of social media, community engagement, and participatory design.
Prof. Poovaiah’s research spans a diverse range: Interaction Design, Visual Language, Information Visualization, New Media, Wayfinding Systems, and Design for Children. His work frequently draws from Indian narratives—developing interactive folktale experiences, multilingual design resources, and accessible digital tools rooted in local culture.
Though he has collaborated with global industry leaders like Microsoft, Google India, and Bharat Electronics, his core commitment remains to education. His pedagogy challenges students to address India’s social complexities and cultural plurality, resisting homogenized global design norms. Prof. Poovaiah’s enduring legacy lies in reimagining design education in India—as open, inclusive, interdisciplinary, and critically engaged with the world around it.
