About B.Design (Hons.) Mobility Design

The B.Design (Hons.) Mobility Design programme at UID provides a creative and contemplative learning space for students to learn to resolve prevailing or future challenges around mobility. The programme trains students to create futuristic, eco-friendly transportation systems. Students gain the information and abilities necessary to produce captivating designs for a variety of vehicles, including cars, boats, and airplanes, through a combination of theoretical and practical. The four-year program focuses on skills specific to automotive at a very early stage like automotive sketching, learning styling cues, surface modelling, and clay modelling, thereafter the design process follows, in the context of automotive design, includes abstracting, applying aesthetic values to conceptualizing visually appealing forms, combined with exposure to potent strands of user-centric and utilitarian approaches. The constant exposure to industry trends, and practices in the classroom teaching model, are very hands-on, thus equilibrating the aspects of excitement and passion, as part of the learning experience.

The ID department has a vision for contributing to the ever-changing landscape of automobile design of today and the future. The pedagogy focuses to sensitize and channelize the passionate energy of young learners, to the world of appreciation of form and aesthetic values of vehicle design, through a rigorous hands-on approach, and equip them to be able to generate exhilarating concepts that are appropriate to the running trends of automotive design. The pedagogy goes one step ahead in addressing one of the key challenges of today, conjoining the trending mobility technologies with styling skills, aimed at reimagining and creating innovative mobility solutions in the contemporary world, pushing the students to think as new creative entrepreneurs. Students gain knowledge of the principles of design, the materials, the technology, and the cultural aspects that affect the design of vehicles and transportation. The students can work in a variety of sectors, such as public transit, aircraft, automotive, and maritime industries.

Career Prospects

The Mobility Design course will provide the students to pursue exciting careers such as Car Designer (Exterior), Car Designer (Interior), Two Wheeler Designer, Commercial Vehicle Designer, Digital Modeler, and CMF Designer. The programme aims to prepare the students to be future leaders – forming a new generation of designers who have both the skill set and mindset to operate as strategic leaders with a broad range of abilities and insight about their own ‘point-of-impact’ on an increasingly diverse industry. The programme combines theoretical and creative workshops. The majority of graduates of the programme will work in the design departments of vehicle manufacturers worldwide.

The Department organizes workshops at regular intervals that enlightens an aspiring transportation designer, with industry practices and processes and professional deliverables in a design studio. This is a platform for the students to interact with professionals and work along, be guided on honing the skills to deliver at professional level. The student in process gains knowledge on inner strengths and presentation techniques as well in the journey. Eminent designers of Two wheeler design, four wheeler design have interacted so far with the students, imparting incredible exposure through intense sessions that continue to over three days at least. There is a lot of excitement, fun and learning added in the process.

What should I include in my portfolio for admission to the B.Des (Hons.) Mobility design department?

Your portfolio should reflect your aesthetic and highlight your skills in 2D/3D product and automotive sketching, 3D models, the design process, and your ability to work hands-on. You may also include your extracurricular skills like photography, model making, presentation skills, etc. It is advisable to keep your portfolio concise & crisp.

Are drawing skills a requirement to get into the programme?

Basic drawing skills are important for enrolling in an automotive design course. It is a good idea to practise drawing regularly as it helps you to present your design ideas. Start exploring and enjoying different mediums of drawing. Product-specific drawings, digital renders, and illustration techniques will be a part of your modules at UID.

Is model-making skill a requirement to get into the programme?

Knowledge of materials and model-making is not required for admission, however, individuals should have basic knowledge of materials. Model-making skills and processes will be touched upon during the modules taught.

What kind of subjects/courses will I study in the Mobility Design programme?

The Mobility design programme at UID offers a well-balanced, hands-on and industry-focused curriculum of theory and practical courses, taught over 4 years in an Undergraduate programme. The details of semester-wise subjects/courses are shared on the website in the department section. The B. Des. (Hons.) Mobility Design programmes include subjects covering Design and Technology, User Experience Design, Internet of Everything, Packaging design, Universal Design, Product Detailing, Surface Modelling and Rendering, entrepreneurship and research methodology. Students get the opportunity to study an International language as well as opt from a bouquet of Interdisciplinary electives. Internship & Graduation projects are offered to gain an understanding of the workings of the product industry.

Does UID organize study trips?

Study trips are organized for students to sensitize them to the cultural influences that might affect the design of products. The trips may include visits to heritage places, Industry visits, design studios, industrial production units, etc. for an immersive experience as per the requirement of the courses. The trips may vary from local visits to outstation travels for a couple of days. Faculty members also accompany the students on the study trips.

Our students have pursued their internships with multinationals like Bajaj Auto, JCB India, Royal Enfield and design studios like Studio 34, Studio Clockworks, Vazirani Automotive, Desmania etc.

What are the options after graduation & what support is available from the institute?

The students upon completion of their degree choose one of the following,

  1. Have their start-up & be entrepreneurs. The Corporate Resource Centre at UID guides as required.
  2. Go overseas for higher education. The International Relations Office at UID guides and supports the admission & visa process.
  3. Get a job in the industry. The Corporate Resource Centre at UID works with the students from their Internship onwards for aspiration mapping & placement accordingly.

What is the examination/ evaluation system?

The evaluation for each course has the following parts-

  1. Continuous Evaluation- It comprises marking regular assignments during the semester. There are points for attendance too.
  2. Mid-Term Exam- Students are evaluated through written exams and an internal jury during the mid-semester.
  3. End Term Exam- The final exam comprises of written paper for theory courses and an external jury for practical courses.

What infrastructure is available on campus?

UID provides world-class facilities at its sprawling campus. The infrastructure includes a technologically advanced Felder Lab, a Makers Lab that includes 3D printers, an AR VR lab, machines for metal works, a fully functional wood workshop, a leather lab, a ceramic lab, audio-visual rooms, a library, an auditorium. All the classrooms are equipped with unique modern facilities and state-of-the-art equipment that provide an extensive experience in art and design. The campus also houses a Centre for Craft Innovation where students can engage in a symbiotic learning model with craftsmen & artisans from across the country for product development & diversification.

What are the class timings?

Classes are scheduled from 9 am to 4 pm on weekdays. Labs are kept open after hours at the request of students if required, safety precautions like masks, aprons, and gloves are all mandatory for the student’s safety.
