The Master’s programme in Fashion Design is conceptualized to prepare innovative professionals possessing a creative vision and aesthetic sensibilities with strategic, practical, and critical skills to take on responsible roles in the fashion industry. The graduates will develop a distinctive edge and identity through diverse projects and an intra-disciplinary pedagogy with a focus on tactility, form, and image through comprehensive inputs and specialization in textiles, bespoke fashion, and fashion styling. The impetus is to prepare future leaders who are adaptive, digitally savvy, effective communicators, responsive, dynamic, and have a research-oriented attitude and critical mindset to create a niche for themselves in the multi-faceted fashion industry.

The programme aims at educating individuals to be creative and responsible designers, competent to handle multiple aspects of today’s highly competitive and diverse fashion Industry. Through ‘learning by doing’, interdisciplinary interaction, and research-based learning, students enhance their ability to work in a team and as professionals. Graduates seek work in various sectors of the fashion industry as entrepreneurs, freelance designers, textile designers, fashion merchandisers, fashion stylists, fashion consultants, creative directors, content creators, and fashion graphics developers, across a wide spectrum of export houses, buying agencies, design studios, designer labels, NGO’s and apparel retail brands.

Yes, you are eligible for M. Des. in Fashion Design. All you need is a curious and willing mind!
Your portfolio should reflect your aesthetic and highlight your skills in 2D/3D drawing, 3D model making, the process of design creation, and any other area of interest. You may also include your extracurricular skills like photography, dance, music, poetry, sports, etc. It is advisable to keep the portfolio concise & crisp.
Basic drawing skills will surely help you in Design Aptitude Test. It is a good idea to practise drawing regularly as it helps you present your design ideas. Start exploring and enjoying different drawing mediums. Fashion-specific drawings and illustration techniques will be taught to you during your classes at UID.
Knowledge & skills in stitching are not required for admission. The basics of stitching are taught as part of the programme.
The Fashion Design programme at UID offers a well-balanced, hands-on and industry-focused curriculum of theory and practical courses, taught over 2 years in Post graduate programme. The details of semester-wise subjects/courses are shared on the website in the department section. M. Des. Fashion Design programme includes subjects covering design conceptualizing, design process, pattern making & garment realization, material exploration, textiles, craft study, merchandising, entrepreneurship and research methodology. Internship & Graduation projects are offered to gain an understanding of the workings of the fashion industry.
Study trips are organized for students to sensitize them to the cultural influences and the fashion industry. The trips may include visits to heritage places, craft clusters, fashion houses, design studios, garment production units, etc. for an immersive experience as per the requirement of the courses. The trips may vary from local visits to outstation travels for a couple of days. Faculty members accompany the students on the study trips.
Our students have pursued their internships with premium designers like Rahul Mishra, Tarun Tahiliani, Meera & Muzaffar Ali, Pero by Aneeth Arora, Samant Chauhan, Nachiket Barve & national level brands like Shoppers Stop, Arvind, Vero Moda, Lee. Students have also undertaken projects with NGOs & Craft sector social enterprises like Gaatha, Craftroots, Jharkhand State Khadi & Village Industries Board & Central Silk Board among others.
The students upon completion of their degree choose one of the following,
i. Have their start-up & be entrepreneurs. The Corporate Resource Centre at UID guides as required.
ii. Go overseas for higher education. The International Relations Office at UID supports and guides the admission & visa process.
ii. Get a job in the fashion/ styling industry. The Corporate Resource Centre at UID works with the students from their Internship onwards for aspiration mapping & placement accordingly.
The evaluation for each course has the following parts-
i. Continuous Evaluation- It comprises marking regular assignments during the semester. There are points for attendance too.
ii. Mid-Term Exam- Students are evaluated through written exams and an internal jury during mid-semester.
iii. End Term Exam- The final exam comprises of written paper for theory courses and an external jury for practical courses.
UID provides world-class facilities at its sprawling campus. The infrastructure includes technologically advanced pattern-making and garment construction labs, a knitwear lab, a textile dyeing and printing lab, a weaving lab, a leather lab, a ceramic lab, audio-visual rooms, a library, and an auditorium. All the classrooms are equipped with unique modern facilities and state-of-the-art equipment that provide an extensive experience in art and design. The campus also houses a Centre for Craft Innovation where students can engage in a symbiotic learning model with craftsmen & artisans from across the country for product development & diversification.
Classes are scheduled from 9 am to 4 pm on weekdays. Labs are kept open after hours at the request of students if required.
