The B.Design (Hons.) Fashion Design & Styling Programme focuses on a holistic, dynamic, and individuality-driven approach to prepare creative professionals for the fashion industry. The course breaks new ground as it has a balanced emphasis on conceptual, curatorial, and managerial application of skills with the underlying ethos that marries technical ability with industry and technology. The course design lays an equilibrium between fashion creation, fashion representation, and fashion management with the inclusion of styling, photography, communication, media make-up, global industry practices, and entrepreneurship. The course allows the graduates to develop identity, expertise, and voice in fashion through the choice of immersive projects and specializations aligned to create a deeper and integrative learning experience.

The Fashion Design & Styling program enables our students to explore and discover their individualistic aesthetic philosophy in a fast-evolving fashion industry. All courses are designed to develop cutting-edge products, processes, and technical understanding. Our multidisciplinary program takes students beyond the traditional approach in fashion design and textiles into every aspect of the lifestyle industry – styling, merchandising, marketing, communication, and entrepreneurship. The students have the resources and state-of-the-art labs to develop a macro perspective of all aspects of the fashion industry whilst augmenting micro expertise through choice-based modules in chosen areas such as sustainable fashion, craft-based design, denim, lingerie, and knitwear among many others.

At the heart of Fashion Design are the numerous skills that we teach our students and since we may not have all expertise in house we get people from different places and areas of expertise to conduct workshops with our students. The topics that are covered in the workshops vary from pattern making and draping; animation illustration; Denim and washing; learning skills like Crochet; workshops with practicing designers who start with a brief and continue till product prototypes, Hair and Makeup workshop with the industry like Titan on designing new Time Wear. In house faculties conduct workshops on printing and dying; turban tying etc as part of the curriculum.

Yes, you are eligible for M. Des. in Fashion Design. All you need is a curious and willing mind!

What should I include in my portfolio for admission to the Fashion Design and Lifestyle department?

Your portfolio should reflect your individual aesthetic and highlight your skills in 2D/3D drawing, 3D model making, the process of design creation, and any other area of interest. You may also include your extracurricular skills like photography, dance, music, poetry, sports, etc. It is advisable to keep the portfolio concise & crisp.

Is drawing skill a requirement to get into the programme?

Basic drawing skills will surely help you in Design Aptitude Test. It is a good idea to practise drawing regularly as it helps you present your design ideas. Start exploring and enjoying different drawing mediums. Fashion-specific drawings and illustration techniques will be taught to you during your classes at UID.

Is stitching skill a requirement to get into the programme?

Knowledge & skills in stitching are not required for admission. The basics of stitching are taught as part of the programme.

What kind of subjects/courses will I study in the Fashion Design and Styling programme?

The Fashion Design and Styling programme at UID offers a well-balanced, hands-on and industry-focused curriculum of theory and practical courses, taught over 4 years in an Undergraduate programme; and 2 years in Post graduate programme. The details of semester-wise subjects/courses are shared on the website in the department section. The B. Des. Fashion & Styling & M. Des. Fashion Design programmes include subjects covering design conceptualizing, design process, pattern making & garment realization, material exploration, textiles, craft study, merchandising, entrepreneurship and research methodology. Students get the opportunity to study an International language as well as opt from a bouquet of Interdisciplinary electives. Internship & Graduation projects are offered to gain an understanding of the workings of the fashion industry.

Do you organize study trips?

Study trips are organized for students to sensitize them to the cultural influences and the fashion industry. The trips may include visits to heritage places, craft clusters, fashion houses, design studios, garment production units, etc. for an immersive experience as per the requirement of the courses. The trips may vary from local visits to outstation travels for a couple of days. Faculty members accompany the students on the study trips.

Our students have pursued their internships with premium designers like Rahul Mishra, Tarun Tahiliani, Meera & Muzaffar Ali, Pero by Aneeth Arora, Samant Chauhan, Nachiket Barve & national level brands like Shoppers Stop, Arvind, Vero Moda, Lee. Students have also undertaken projects with NGOs & Craft sector social enterprises like Gaatha, Craftroots, Jharkhand State Khadi & Village Industries Board & Central Silk Board among others.

What are the options after graduation & what support is available from the institute?

The students upon completion of their degree choose one of the following,

  1. Have their start-up & be entrepreneurs. The Corporate Resource Centre at UID guides as required.
  2. Go overseas for higher education. The International Relations Office at UID guides and supports the admission & visa process.
  3. Get a job in the industry. The Corporate Resource Centre at UID works with the students from their Internship onwards for aspiration mapping & placement accordingly.

What is the examination/ evaluation system?

The evaluation for each course has the following parts-

  1. Continuous Evaluation- It comprises marking regular assignments during the semester. There are points for attendance too.
  2. Mid-Term Exam- Students are evaluated through written exams and an internal jury during the mid-semester.
  3. End Term Exam- The final exam comprises of written paper for theory courses and an external jury for practical courses.

What infrastructure is available on campus?

UID provides world-class facilities at its sprawling campus. The infrastructure includes technologically advanced pattern-making and garment construction labs, a knitwear lab, a textile dyeing and printing lab, a weaving lab, a leather lab, a ceramic lab, audio-visual rooms, a library, and an auditorium. All the classrooms are equipped with unique modern facilities and state-of-the-art equipment that provide an extensive experience in art and design. The campus also houses a Centre for Craft Innovation where students can engage in a symbiotic learning model with craftsmen & artisans from across the country for product development & diversification.

What are the class timings?

Classes are scheduled from 9 am to 4 pm on weekdays. Labs are kept open after hours at the request of students if required.
