B.Des (Hons.) Animation & Game Design programme is geared towards creating expert storytellers well-versed in the technology of digital environments & emerging areas of AI, VR & XR, and Simulation. Students will explore the programming foundation required for game development and game engine techniques to exploit evolving technologies like Virtual World Building, XR, Advanced VFX and Simulation.
The objective of the Programme is to approach game design and simulation in a holistic manner with the combination of game theory and appropriate creative and technical skill sets inculcated through extensive classes, design projects and industry experiences. These targets will be achieved with a cutting-edge design lab, VR and Simulation studio. Industry-driven game design projects will be brought into the classroom for a glimpse into real-world practices. Simulation design projects will target improved safety standards across industries, notably in the healthcare, aviation and defence industries.
The Animation & Game Design Programme will give inputs in research and development, concept designing, visual designing, storytelling, players’ behaviour & psychology, etc. Learning also includes input from fine arts and cognitive sciences with an emphasis on developing students’ communication skills, teamwork and creative thinking. With these holistic inputs, students execute assignments using the latest software and hardware including Adobe Suite, Maya, Blender, Unreal, Unity, Tilt Brush, Resolume, Cintiq Systems, VR labs, Motion capture, and hands-on workshops, etc. Beyond the periodically updated curriculum, UID’s masterclasses by industry experts and visiting faculty keep them abreast of the latest developments.

The course will begin with design thinking, innovation and original storytelling which are essential mainstays of the domain of game design. The students will also get trained to become the creators of their virtual worlds. Borrowing from the best design and experiential learning practices, the course will cover a broad range of game cultures, tools, and techniques for independent 2D and 3D game design. It will span the entire production pipeline across production-driven CGI to new-age Simulation and XR content creation. As coding is at the core, students will get to explore programming from foundation to intermediate levels through game engines. In final year they will execute a project with evolving technologies like Metaverse, XR, Advanced VFX, and Interactive Prototype Games.
The Indian gaming market is expected to triple over the next four years, according to recent NASSCOM reports. Around 50,000 people in India, work in game design and development. They are employed by game development studios, which are either independent companies or owned by game publishers. Over half of all men and one in four women play games regularly, and the market is likely to expand as new technologies are introduced which make gaming more realistic and exciting. Development studios are keen to employ game designers who understand markets and target audiences and have the imagination and creativity to excite existing players and reach new audiences. The programme follows an interdisciplinary approach to education enabling students to establish their own start-ups or find employment in the industry and grow into leadership roles.

Yes, you are eligible for B.Des (Hons.) Animation & Game Design, irrespective of your discipline. All you need is a burning desire to create new challenging games.
Your portfolio should reflect your desire to tell stories, understand challenges in existing games, and passion for the Game. Good sketching is an advantage although clear communication through simple drawings is equally valuable. It is advisable to keep your portfolio concise & crisp.
Basic sketching skills will surely help you in the Design Aptitude Test. It is a good idea to practice live sketching regularly as it helps you to present your ideas. Sketching, drawing, and illustrations will be a part of your modules at UID.
The Animation & Game Design programme at UID offers a well-balanced, hands-on, and industry-focused curriculum of theory and practical courses, taught over 4 years in an Undergraduate programme. The details of semester-wise subjects/courses are shared on the website in the department section. The B. Des. (Hons.) programme includes subjects covering a range of topics beginning with fundamentals of Game technology, drawing, basic programing, and design. It covers the pre-production-post stages of a variety of analog and digital game techniques including providing you with a well-rounded skill set by addressing game theory, cinematic, art & animation, programming & game mechanics, production methodologies, and especially creative writing and storytelling skills. The program’s focus is to delve into the creative process and pre-production planning, the design principles, the processes of video and audio production, and as well as visual-based principles such as interface design, Character designing, 3D modelling, textures, and animation. This is all wrapped up with an in-depth look at the production process, project and team management techniques, and Game development. It includes entrepreneurship and research methodology which prepare students for industry and academic careers. Students get the opportunity to study an international language as well as opt from a bouquet of interdisciplinary electives. Internship & Graduation projects help to gain real-world experiences.
Study trips are organized for students to sensitize them to the cultural influences that might affect the design of animation. The trips may include visits to craft and heritage places, industry visits, design studios, etc. for an immersive experience as per the requirement of the courses. They may vary from local visits to outstation travels for a couple of days. Faculty members also accompany the students on the study trips.
Our students have pursued their internships with multinationals like Tata Elxsi, Snej Hammer Games, Bucks Design, Anicipate, Game Shashtra, UB Soft, Lakshya Digital, and studios like Rockstar Gaming, Zynga, and EA Games.
The students upon completion of their degree choose one of the following: i. Become entrepreneurs with their start-ups. The Corporate Resource Centre at UID guides as required. ii. Go overseas for higher education. The International Relations Office at UID supports and guides the admission & visa process. ii. Get a job in the industry. The Career Resource Centre at UID works with the students from their Internship onwards for aspiration mapping and relevant placements.
The evaluation for each course has the following parts: i. Continuous Evaluation- It comprises marking regular assignments during the semester. There are points for attendance too. ii. Mid-Term Exam- Students are evaluated through written exams and an internal jury during the mid-semester. iii. End Term Exam- The final exam comprises a written paper for theory courses and an external jury for practical courses.
UID provides world-class facilities at its sprawling campus. The infrastructure includes a computer lab with high-end machines, a Wacom lab, a technologically advanced Felder Lab, a Makers Lab that includes 3D printers, an AR VR Lab, machines for metal works, a fully functional wood workshop, a leather lab, ceramic lab, audio-visual rooms, library, and an auditorium. All the classrooms are equipped with unique modern facilities and state-of-the-art equipment that provide an extensive experience in art and design. The campus also houses a Centre for Craft Innovation where students can engage in a symbiotic learning model with craftsmen & artisans from across the country for product development & diversification.
Classes are scheduled from 9 am to 4 pm on weekdays. Labs are kept open after hours at the request of students if required, safety precautions like masks, aprons, and gloves are all mandatory for the student’s safety.
